Health Insight, the QIO for Utah and Nevada, developed a helpful composite ranking for nearly every hospital in the nation, using 25 national CMS measures and satisfaction ratings from inpatients. Results shown by state. Easier to use than the federal HospitalCompare website, but less detail, and Mortality ratings do not appear to be included. Updated with 2008 data, September 2009

Average Total Premiums and Employee Contribution, Selected Cities, 2008  Editor's Pick

The 2008 average health insurance premiums and amount of employee contribution for single, single-plus-one, and family coverage by selected cities and metropolitan regions, or remainder of state shown in this MEPS table of costs for private-sector businesses. Average single premiums in many parts of the country now exceed $5000 including Alaska, New Haven CT, parts of Massachusetts, NH, Charleston WV, and Milwaukee. Lowest rates of $3405 in selected areas of Hawaii, $3639 in Kansas City, MO, and $3708 in Provo Orem Utah which also had the lowest for average single-plus-one premiums ($6454). Family premiums were best in New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner LA ($10,025) and Provo UT; highest in out-state Minnesota ($15,010)and New Haven-Milford CT ($14,840). Portions of CA, NH, WV and Milwaukee metro exceeded $14,000. Coverage levels and plan design will vary.

Press Ganey - Patient Satisfaction in ER - Emergency Dept. (2008)

Press Ganey's 2009 Emergency Department Pulse Report examines trends in overall patient satisfaction in the Emergency Rooms of 1725 hospitals (1.4 million patients) during 2008. Longer waiting times without staying informed about delays, uncomfortable waiting rooms, and second shift (3 to 11 pm) meant lower satisfaction levels. Total time in ER averaged just over 4 hours, with South Dakota average under 3 hours. At the other end of the spectrum were KS and Utah where total time in ED was more than 6 hours on average

Utah CheckPoint - Heart and Pneumonia Care Quality Ratings, 2009

Compare Utah hospital inpatient quality and ratings for heart attack, congestive heart failure and pneumonia care, 2008-2009 data. These measures are not as extensive, but are similar to what is available through CMS' HospitalCompare website, and the Joint Commission (JCAHO). May be easier to use this site, due to the side-by-side hospital comparisons. Some measures are Medicare-only, and some use all patients (all payer data). Utah Hospital Association

Utah Gall Bladder Removal costs - Inpatient & Outpatient (NEW Sept 2008)

Average Charges (closest you will get to costs) for outpatient laparoscopic gall bladder removal surgery in Utah were $6258 in 2006. Price range for hospital ambulatory surgery centers varied from $2841 to nearly $12,000. Volumes and Inpatient prices for gallbladder surgery also shown statewide ($13,000 to $40,000 depending on type) and by hospital name for laparoscopy and Open procedures. All patients over age 18, not just Medicare. Report was the first of its kind and shows that over 95% of all gall bladder removals were laparoscopic - 3/4 done as outpatients. Utah Dept. of Health

Utah Heart Bypass Surgery, Angioplasty, Heart Attack & Failure, Stroke: Survival & Prices

Compare 2006-2008 survival rates at Utah hospitals for adults for cardiac (heart) bypass surgery (CABG), balloon angioplasty, heart attack, heart failure and stroke. Identify UT hospitals that had the best ratings with fewer deaths than expected. The for-profit (IASIS) Davis Hospital in Layton came up very short in heart failure care. Average 2008 charges for each hospital in the conditions noted above, plus heart catheterization (cardiac cath) and heart valve charges. Utah Hip and Knee Surgery: Death Rate and Charges (Hospital Prices)  Editor's Pick

Hospital-specific survival rates (actual deaths vs. expected death rate) for hip fracture and hip replacement patients; 3-year period (2006-2008). Average UT hospital charges (2008) shown for hip or knee joint replacement (e.g. $31,678 for 3-day knee replacement stay, except at Dixie where $24,000 is more likely), including bilateral, other hip and femur, knee, lower leg & ankle procedures; hip fracture repair. Utah HMO Health Insurance Plan 2008 Ratings

Compares Utah HMOs covering about 40% of Utah residents - health insurance plans Altius, HealthWise, SelectHealth, United Healthcare, and Medicaid plans (Healthy U, Molina, IHC Preferred, Select Access PEHP CHIP) on back pain, cancer screening, and high blood pressure (categorized under Health Care for Adults); diabetes, antidepressant medication, prenatal & maternity, preventive care, well-child visits & immunizations, overall member satisfaction rates, and more. Shows actual performance rates, and a star-rating. Members rated slightly higher satisfaction with Altius than with other plans, but the HEDIS quality scores are not necessarily higher. Utah provides average charges (price) statewide, and on a hospital-specific basis for many common inpatient stays, such as pneumonia, stroke, appendectomy, hip and knee procedures, gall bladder surgery, hysterectomy, heart failure, heart attack, chest pain, coronary bypass, heart valve procedures, vaginal and cesarean deliveries, newborn births, chemotherapy, psychoses, alcohol or drug abuse, rehabilitation, back and neck procedures, digestive disorders, abdominal surgery, nutritional/metabolic problems, transplants and much more. Utah Maternity & Newborns: Compare 2008 Hospital Charges, Patient Safety, Volume  Editor's Pick

Hospital quality ratings for Utah maternity and newborn care cover vaginal delivery and Cesarean Section births. Hospital Patient Safety reports show UT hospitals who performed significantly better than expected for obstetric injuries to the mother's body, and birth injuries to newborns (2006 to 2008). Average 2008 charges (will soon be two years old, so add inflation): Typical Vaginal childbirth cost about $5222 statewide, up 9% from 2007; a c-section was about $8938; newborn care additional $1813 or more. (See specific hospital average prices.) Uses APR-DRGs. Earns Editor's Pick designation for its user-friendliness, willingness to tackle quality and charges in the same report, separately identifying complicated cases, and permitting viewing as html web pages, instead of requiring downloads of big reports. Utah Outpatient Ambulatory Surgery Charges, 2007 - by facility (pdf)

Average 2007 charges for outpatient procedures & ambulatory surgery at Utah's 18 freestanding ambulatory surgery centers and 44 hospitals. At 578 pages and full of CPT code abbreviations, the format is extremely cumbersome for consumers. Hospitals and surgical facilities listed alphabetically starting on page 37. Average prices for reportable procedures such as colonoscopy, upper or lower GI endoscopy, EGD, polpectomy, knee arthroscopy, cataract and laser eye procedures, myringotomy (ear tubes), tonsillectomy, cardiac cath, pacemaker, spinal injection, cochear implants ($46,617), carpal tunnel release, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal), septoplasty and many more. Utah Pneumonia Hospitalizations, Quality and Charges by Hospital  Editor's Pick

Compare survival rates (deaths) for pneumonia (all adults, not only Medicare) and average 2008 pneumonia charges (a proxy for prices or average cost) by hospital name. Fifteen UT hospitals (including VA Medical) had superior performance. Charges are grouped by severity level of illness. The Web Page format is extremely user-friendly. Utah Stroke Deaths, Hospital Survival Rates and Costs

Hospital-specific survival rates for stroke compared to expected deaths. Eight UT hospitals (incl. VA Medical) had statistically fewer deaths than expected for adults ages 18 and over, 2006-2008 data. Average death rate statewide declined to 9.2% for the three years. Typical prices at individual hospitals shown. Average 2008 hospital charges were about $14,000 for two-thirds of patients, $22,146 for the remaining more severely ill group, up 12%.
